More info

The spotted Raphael catfish, otherwise known as a talking catfish; is a popular catfish among aquaria enthusiasts, owing to its wonderful white spotted colouration against black and intriguing antics.

Heavily armoured, these catfish will pick a favourite hiding place and remain hidden for the best part of daylight hours; however, tempted with food, they will make darting appearances from time to time. They will eat virtually anything offered, and are infamously known for being able to vacuum up food very quickly. Its not surprising to see many talking catfish with pot bellies, so make sure other bottom dwellers are fed away from its den!

They are ideal fish for beginners, being capable of handling poor water conditions and living for 20+ years. They won't pick fights with other fish, though will dispute other large fish that invade its hiding place.

Can be kept with a surprising number of different fish, owing mostly to their tendency to hide at night; and tough scales, they can be kept with small to medium cichlids. Can also be kept at the other end of the spectrum with peaceful, community fish; though their large hoover mouths should be a warning sign against keeping with very small tetras, that may go missing at night!

When removed from water, these catfish can make a squeaking noise by rubbing their pectoral fins together; hence their name "talking catfish"
